3 Vehicle Accessories You'll Need To Tow Your New Caravan

Posted on

Camping holidays are a cultural icon in Australia. However, for many people, roughing it out in a tent can lose its appeal after a while. For this reason, you may be planning to buy a caravan so that you can add a new level of luxury, comfort and convenience to your camping holidays.

As well as deciding on which caravan you're going to buy, you'll also need to modify your car to enable it to tow your new caravan. Here are three essential pieces of towing equipment that you'll need to purchase.

1. A tow ball

A tow ball is a solid metal ball that is used to harness your caravan to your car. This will need to be professionally attached to your vehicle to ensure that it's safe to use. Make sure that you choose a tow ball that's designed to handle the weight of the specific caravan you've bought. If you have a standard sedan, it's also a good idea to choose a tow ball that has a higher rise than tow balls made for SUVs or four-wheel drives.

2. A towing mirror set

When you're towing a caravan, your field of vision via your wing mirrors will be severely restricted by the length and the width of the caravan. You'll need to get a set of towing mirrors to increase your rear visibility and ensure safety while on the road. These mirrors are easy to install and are simply clipped onto your car's existing wing mirrors.

3. A wind deflector

It's common knowledge that towing a caravan will cause you to use more petrol over the same distance than when you're driving your car without a load. However, you can reduce your fuel consumption while towing significantly by adding a wind deflector to the roof of your car.

Made from hardened plastic, wind deflectors are attached to the rear of your vehicle onto an existing roof rack or with a rail that is clamped to each side of the car. It works by redirecting oncoming air over the top of your caravan. This reduces drag, increases your fuel economy and also helps to stabilise the caravan when you're on the road.

With these accessories, your vehicle will be well equipped to tow your new caravan safely, effectively and efficiently. If you're not sure which products have the right specifications for either your caravan or your vehicle, you can get the best advice from your caravan salesperson or from a caravan accessories store.
